FLANDERS - Lot 143
FLANDERS Important Oudenaarde tapestry, late XVIIᵉ century Wool and silk Height 300 cm; Width 500 cm Rare tapestry of architectural greenery, illustrating the transition between a formal garden and the wooded edge of a vast aristocratic estate. The composition is organized around an imposing cruciform basin with water jet, placed in the foreground, a true focal point of the scene, symbolizing the mastery of water and classical order in the midst of abundant nature. The setting is a refined blend of landscape architecture and lush undergrowth, where dense foliage, aquatic plants and dense trees create remarkable depth. In this naturalistic setting, an animal scene unfolds that is both comical and symbolic: two raccoons confront a snake, evoking an instinctive, playful struggle, while two peacocks, figures of prestige, beauty and vanity, enliven the composition with their elegant presence. In the background, the perspective hints at a landscaped park and the outskirts of a château, suggesting man's domination of the landscape, a recurring theme in the great Flemish verdures of the late XVIIᵉ century, conceived as immersive and spectacular backdrops for vast interiors. The tapestry is framed by a wide border of polychrome flower and fruit garlands, richly treated, emphasizing the monumentality and decorative quality of the whole. Condition : Very good condition. Minor wear and maintenance restorations, with no impact on the legibility or decorative power of this tapestry of exceptional dimensions." Expert: Mr. Kassapian
