Giuseppe Maria BONZANIGO (1745 - 1820) - Lot 461
Giuseppe Maria BONZANIGO (1745 - 1820) FIREPLACE SCREEN Carved and gilded wood, the sliding tapestry leaf in a rich surround of garlands, palms and fluted pilasters, the pediment engraved with the initials "DL". Italy, circa 1770-1780. H: 100 cm, W: 64 cm, D: 40 cm (Restorations) Please note. Sculptor, designer and ornamentalist Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo was one of the leading figures in Piedmont's decorative arts at the end of the 18th century. Active mainly in Turin, he worked for the court of Savoy and became sculptor and ornamentalist to the King of Sardinia. His work is distinguished by exceptional virtuosity in carving gilded or lacquered wood. His work is part of the artistic context of the court of the sovereigns of the House of Savoy, particularly during the reign of Victor-Amédée III of Sardinia. Today, Bonzanigo is recognized as one of the most important Italian ornamental sculptors of his time. Mantel screens are a particularly refined aspect of his work, perfectly reflecting the transition from Piedmont rococo to an elegant, theatrical neoclassicism. Several of Bonzanigo's works, including furniture and fireplace screens, are held in public collections: Palazzo Reale di To; Palazzina di Caccia di Stu; Museo Civico d'Arte Antica.
