PROUDHON (Pierre-Joseph). "Mon livre fait rage..." - Lot 46
PROUDHON (Pierre-Joseph). "Mon livre fait rage..." Autograph letter signed to Brussels printer Alphonse-Nicolas Lebègue. Paris, May 12, 1858. Unep.1/2in-8. De la Justice dans la Révolution et dans l'Église. Launched on April 22, 1858, this pamphlet by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon was seized on April 28 by order of the imperial prosecutor, but it had been so successful that almost all of it had already been sold. The author appealed, but left immediately for Brussels to avoid imprisonment, and to have the work reprinted there. "We have an old score to settle: I haven't forgotten it. I had hoped to make this settlement with you under conditions that would be happier for me: since fate has decided otherwise, let us at least take advantage of what it has left us. A M.Bruylant, of Brussels, rue de LaMadeleine, 42, on learning of the seizure of my latest work, suggested that I produce a Belgian edition, of 2 to 3,000 copies, by paying me a fixed price in advance for copyright. Naturally, I thanked Mr.Bruylant, and asked Mr.Garnier (Hippolyte), when he came to Brussels, to tell you about this affair. I don't know whether he did, and I've come to tell you myself. My book is raging: but what's better is that all those who have read it say it should be read, and then reread: which leads me to believe that it's a work that will have some staying power. Would you take on the task of reprinting it in Brussels, in 2 or 3,000 copies, and on the terms offered to me by Messrs Garnier? It is understood that from the amount of my fees, you will retain what you can for the publication of my Philosophy Program, if you have not sold any to cover yourself. Should you have any left over, it would be well for you to send me a few dozen..."
