MONET (Claude). [The Famous Monet-Rodin Exhibition of 1889]. - Lot 34
MONET (Claude). [The Famous Monet-Rodin Exhibition of 1889]. Autograph letter signed "Claude Monet", [addressed to Gustave Geffroy]. Giverny, May 1 [1889]. 1p. in-16. "Dear friend, I'll come on Monday. Rendezvous 11h. 1/4 at VanGogh's or Rodin's at noon (marble depot). You should tell him we'll have lunch together. Amitiés..." Monet and Rodin, a mutual friendship of admiration against all odds. When this friendship began in 1886, Rodin was already an established, official artist, while Monet was still facing criticism and financial difficulties. They took part in several joint exhibitions, but it was in 1889 that the exhibition considered to be the high point of their relationship was held: organized by the Parisian gallery Georges Petit on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition (opening June 20, 1889), it brought together exclusively the two artists, Monet presenting a veritable retrospective of over 160 paintings and Rodin lending some thirty sculptures. The catalog published for the occasion included two prefaces, one by Mirbeau for Monet, the other by Geoffroy for Rodin. Rodin's lively character and Monet's desire to take advantage of the event to finally meet with success caused some tension between the two artists, but mutual admiration prevailed and they remained on excellent terms until Rodin's death in 1917, exchanging compliments and support. Monet, for example, defended Rodin when the latter was attacked over his Balzac and contributed largely to the subscription in favor of The Thinker. The painter's brother, the art dealer Théo Van Gogh, was an important player in the dissemination of Monet's work, buying and selling many of his works, and in 1888, for example, exhibited at Boussod Valadon's a series of paintings by the painter in Antibes. Writer and art critic Gustave Geffroy (1855-1926), an active supporter of the Impressionists, was a close friend of Claude Monet, whose biography he wrote (1922).
