Historical background: This bronze statuette depicting the Westphalian Queen Catherine de Wurtemberg, wife of Jérôme Bonaparte, is based on a print published by lithographer and illustrator Antoine Maurin (1793-1860). This official portrait of the former Queen of Westphalia was registered in July 1836, along with those of her husband "Prince Napoléon Jérôme de Montfort" and her daughter "Princess Mathilde Laetizia Jérôme de Montfort". These titles were adopted by the couple after the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1813, the title of Prince and Princess de Montfort having been conferred by King Frederick I of Württemberg on his son-in-law and daughter in 1816. The highly political iconography depicts the Princesse de Montfort, her hand resting on the Napoleonic code ratified in the short-lived Kingdom of Westphalia created on August 8, 1807. This is a rare sculpted representation of Jérôme Bonaparte's wife, of whom we know an official portrait by Baron Bosio (circa 1810, white marble bust, H.62 cm, Musée national du Château de Fontainebleau, N.3111) and a small-scale bust in gilded bronze signed 'Biennais' in the Colonna Walewski collection.
