History: In 1729, Charles Albert, Elector of Bavaria and future Emperor Charles VII, founded the Order of St. George. The House of Wittelsbach was one of the last in Germany to create a dynastic order of chivalry. The order was organized in the manner of the first military orders, and dedicated to the defense of the Immaculate Conception. Following the accession of the Palatine branch of the House of Wittelsbach to the Electorate of Bavaria (1777), the Order took second place to the Order of St. Hubert. It was reorganized in 1778 and 1827. Rigorously selected from the greatest families of the German aristocracy, its members are divided into three classes: grand commanders, commanders and knights. Princes of the House of Bavaria hold the rank of Grand Prior. The size of the plaque, worn by all members, varies according to their rank in the order. The plaques of the higher classes generally have the silver center and lozenges enameled in white. The present plaque is therefore undoubtedly a knight's plaque, and is of remarkable craftsmanship. According to the typed inventory book of the Prince Victor Napoleon collection, n°643 is described as follows: Plaque de l'Ordre de St-GEORGES de BAVIERE in silver and enamel Belonged to Emperor NAPOLEON III Biography: EMPEROR NAPOLEON III Napoleon III, (1808-1873), third son of Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland, and Hortense de Beauharnais. He grew up in exile after the fall of the First Empire. Soon conspiring for Italian unity, he established himself as heir to the throne in 1832 on the death of the Duke of Reichstadt. He attempted several failed coups d'état, in 1836 and 1840, but was eventually elected people's representative after the 1848 revolution, and then President of the Republic. After seizing power in the coup d'état of December 2, 1851, he restored the Empire a year later. He reigned until 1870, when he was captured by the Prussians after the defeat at Sedan. The Third Republic was proclaimed on September 4, 1870, and Napoleon III went into exile. In 1853, the Emperor married Eugénie de Montijo, Countess of Teba, (1826-1920). The couple had only one child, Louis-Napoléon, known as Loulou, who died prematurely in 1879 in Zululand.
