NAPOLEON III. - Lot 33
NAPOLEON III. Autograph letter signed "Napoléon" to Constant Thuillier. Palais des Tuileries, March 29, 1865. 3/4 p. in-8, embossed letterhead with his crowned initial. "I wish to congratulate not only the brilliant orator but also the statesman who had the courage to tell the Chamber some great truths yesterday. Since the people have been sovereign, it is they who are generally flattered, not those in power. I thank you for your speech and for this new proof of your devotion...". Constant Thuillier, a former prefect and Secretary General of the Ministry of the Interior under Persigny, had become Vice-President of the Conseil d'État. On March 28, 1865, he had just given a speech to the Chamber of Deputies in which, while denouncing the "excesses" of press freedom, he praised the imperial regime, accused of being "the reign of arbitrariness": "The Empire is the greatest, the happiest, the proudest democracy the world has ever seen, crowned by glory and wise liberty".
