MAUPERTUIS (Pierre-Louis Moreau de). Autograph letter signed - Lot 237
MAUPERTUIS (Pierre-Louis Moreau de). Autograph letter signed. S.l., "mardy 24" [probably 1752]. 1 p. in-4, yellowed paper. "MY LETTERS ARE SOLD HERE, WITHOUT MY HAVING RECEIVED EITHER NOTICE OR COPIES. THIS IS VERY MALHONEST TO MR. WALTHER [the Dresden publisher Georg Konrad Walther published in 1752 an unauthorized edition of Lettres de Maupertuis]. I hope that after having sold to the booksellers what he could, he will not want to sell me the rest of the edition as the whole edition which I asked you to take from him and to pay him. I should be accustomed to bad behaviour, but I am always surprised by it. I am reopening my letter, because I have just received yours dated Saturday; there is perhaps a mistake in the date. I was surprised not to have received any reply. Without doubt, it is no longer time to withdraw my letters. It is better to write to me by the king's hunter than by mail..." ADEPTED MATHEMATICIAN OF THE NEWTONIAN SYSTEM, PIERRE-LOUIS MOREAU DE MAUPERTUIS (1698-1759) was entrusted in 1745 with the presidency of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. His main contribution concerns curves on different spaces, and he is also famous for the polemic that opposed him, in 1750-1751, to Voltaire who caricatured him under the features of "Doctor Akakia".
