97. LOWE (Hudson). Autograph letter signed to Charles Somers - Lot 97
97. LOWE (Hudson). Autograph letter signed to Charles Somerset, Governor of the Cape. St. Helena, February 14, 1817. 3 pp. 1/2 in-4, splits at folds, one large one at center fold, tab. "My Lord, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Your Lordship's letter by The Julia in reference to that part of it where Your LORDSHIP IS SO OBLIGING AS TO SAY YOU WILL DETAIN COUNT LAS CASES AT THE CAPE. As this appears to be my desire until answers from Government may arrive, I beg to observe, it is solely on public grounds my suggestion was presented, considering that from the time of count Las Cases's departure from this island I have no further relation with him, beyond what Government may direct me to resume. I am still not the less impressed with THE NECESSITY OF WITHHOLDING HIS PAPERS TO RETURN TO EUROPE until Governement may form its determination in regard to him, HAVING SINCE HIS DEPARTURE FROM HENCE HAD STILL FURTHER PROOFS OF THE PECULIARLY MISCHIEVOUS & INTRIGUING TURN OF HIS DISPOSITION in what has related to his connections with the prison under my charge at this place...". Translation: "My lord, I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter, by the Julie [a sloop of the British navy, assigned for the use of the garrison of St. Helena], with regard to that passage in which YOUR Lordship is obliged to say that she will keep in custody the Count LAS CASES at the Cape. As this will appear to be my good pleasure until answers from the Government can arrive, I take the liberty of observing that it is only for reasons of public interest that my suggestion has been made, knowing that since Count Las Cases has left this island, all intercourse with him ceases for me beyond what the Government may direct me to pursue. I am not the less penetrated with the NECESSITY OF PREVENTING HIS PAPERS FROM RETURNING TO EUROPE until the Government can be determined in regard to him, having had since his departure from here still new proofs of HIS STRANGELY MALVEILLANT & FACTIOUS ATTITUDE in regard to what may have concerned him in the prison of which I am in charge in this place..."
