MONET (Claude). Autograph letter signed to Gustave Geffroy. - Lot 104
MONET (Claude). Autograph letter signed to Gustave Geffroy. Giver_x0002_ny, July 11, 1911. 4 pp. in-8, letterhead printed at his address in Giverny, mourning border, envelope preserved. IN MOURNING OF HER WIFE ALICE, who died in May 1911. "Dear friend, I don't hear from you anymore, and I would like to have news from you, which I hope will be good for you and yours. I still wanted to write to you SINCE THE GOOD DAY WITH CLEMENCEAU, which had [been] so soothing to me, but HOWEVER MY PAIN HAS QUICKLY TAKEN OVER, and [I] am more and more without courage, having no taste for anything and not even the strength to write. In short, more and more helpless from this terrible loneliness, and on top of that, as if I had not enough of my sorrow, a whole series of troubles, interests, businessmen, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc. NO ONE CAN KNOW WHAT I SUFFER, I AM A LOST MAN, FINISHED, ALAS. But this is too much about my sad fate. I would like to hear from you soon, and if you can, come and see me, you should get along with Vaquez [the doctor and collector Henri Vaquez] who promised to come. And by the way, I would like you to make him understand that I want to pay him for the consultations. Ask him what he owes and I will send it to him at once; that will put us both at ease. I am expecting a word from you, and try to come, it will do me good... "The writer and art critic GUSTAVE GEFFROY (1855-1926), an active supporter of the Impressionists, was a close friend of Claude Monet, whose biography he wrote in 1922.
