SERVICE OF THE GREAT SQUIRE. Journey of Their Majesties and - Lot 258
SERVICE OF THE GREAT SQUIRE. Journey of Their Majesties and His Highness the Imperial Prince. To Lorraine. Paris, Imp. Monrocq, Maison Longuet Lance succr, 1866. In-4, fully tabbed, embossed green percaline, gilt title on first cover, smooth spine, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First cover rubbed, wear of the gilding. Autographed booklet of the trip to Lorraine organized for the imperial family from July 14 to 19, 1866. Bearing the letterhead of the Grand Écuyer's Service, it was established by General Emile-Félix de Fleury (1815-1884), Grand Écuyer, head of the imperial family's honorary service and in charge of organizing his trips for official journeys and ceremonies. General Fleury, a Bonapartist diplomat from the earliest days, describes the establishment of these programmes in his Memoirs: "When all these arrangements were finally established, I had a dozen final programmes drawn up, including the itinerary, the use of days and hours, setting out the stays and stops in the designated stations, giving a partial map of the various departments crossed, and historical notes on each locality visited. These programs were distributed to those called to the honorary service, so that everyone was well aware of the obligations of the trip. Apart from this programme booklet, I gave Their Majesties a special notebook [...]" The official edition, richly illustrated, was published eight months later under the title Voyage en Lorraine de Sa Majesté l'Impératrice et de H. A. I. Le Prince Impérial (Plon, 1867). A rare program book of this important imperial voyage, drawn up and printed in a dozen copies by the Grand Écuyer to serve as a logbook for the members of Their Majesties' honorary service.
