"Biography: Louis DORET (1789-1866), Commander of the Legion of Honour, entered the Navy as a ship's boy and became an ensign in 1812. Having proposed to Napoleon, after the second abdication, to transport him secretly to the United States, he was dismissed by the government of Louis XVIII and joined the merchant navy, which took him to the Asian seas. Returning to the Royal Navy under Louis Philippe, he was part of the expedition that brought back Napoleon's ashes from St. Helena, and retired as a captain. He left in 849 to be appointed governor of Reunion and senator on 4 March 1853. He was the rapporteur in the Senate of the law aiming at the purchase of the domains of Saint Helena by France. Jacques Massé in his historical dictionary mentions two drawings made by him on the island which are probably ours.
