Louis XVI Rock crystal medallion in the shape of a heart cir - Lot 65
Louis XVI Rock crystal medallion in the shape of a heart circled in gold and containing the hair of King Louis XVI. 2 x 2 cm Provenance : Baron Hüe, bailiff of the House of King Louis XVI. Remained in the family by descent until today. Exhibition: Sedelmeyer Gallery, Marie-Antoinette and her time, Paris, 1894, n°44. Biography: François Hüe (1757-1819), bailiff of the House of Louis XVI, followed the royal family to the Temple. Deputy to Jean-Baptiste Cléry at the side of Louis XVI. He was arrested on 2 September 1792 and dismissed. He accompanied Marie-Thérèse de France to Vienna in 1795. Louis XVIII created him baron in 1814. He had appointed him First valet and general treasurer of his House. In 1806, François Hüe published his Memoirs on The Last Years of the Reign and Life of Louis XVI. However, it is written in a dictionary from 1860: "Hüe François, valet to the dauphin (son of Louis XVI), was locked up in the Temple with the royal family, and showed him heroic devotion. He outlived his masters, and was able to leave France, he returned to the restoration, and became Louis XVIII's first valet." We have the Last Years of Louis XVI, Paris, 1814. He is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery (39th division) with his son Baron André Marie Hüe (1786-1854), who succeeded him as First Valet to Louis XVIII and then Charles X.
