Adrien Louis Marie Cavelier (Paris 1785 - 1867) - Lot 303
Adrien Louis Marie Cavelier (Paris 1785 - 1867) The table psyche of Princess Pauline Borghese. Pen drawing, watercolor. Circular red stamp, numbered 488 ter, lower right and referenced in the Maison Odiot model inventory. 90 x 60 cm (Small tears, folds and stains) Under glass - modern frame Provenance : -Probably Henry Auguste goldsmith's collection -Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot Collection -Count and Countess Charles André Colonna-Walewski Collection History: The rectangular mirror is surmounted by a pediment and features a central mirror mounted on median pivots. The frame is formed by two pilaster-shaped side jambs. The design is formed by two supports at the base, closed by two naturalistic chimeras. In the middle of each of the four uprights, a clasp encircled by a wreath of flowers holds a butterfly, while palmettes unfold on either side. The pediment features a triumphant angel on a step, holding a bow and laurel wreath on either side. The yellow watercolors indicate a vermeil finish. This naturalistic style of chimera feet appeared as early as 1798 with Odiot. Note the omnipresence of Pauline Borghese's emblem, the butterfly, which appears four times on this drawing. We can therefore hypothesize, supported by the presence of the triumphant angel at the top of the mirror, that this design was conceived for the wedding of Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon I.'s beloved sister, to Prince Camille Borghese in 1803. The sale of this watercolor of Pauline Borghese's psyche is an astonishing revelation. Indeed, it raises questions about its realization, which until now has not been revealed. Above all, it foreshadows the large psyche offered to Empress Marie-Louise of Austria by the City of Paris (1) , and created by the same Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot for her 1810 marriage to Napoleon I.
