1970 CITROEN SM - Lot 90
1970 CITROEN SM Serial number: SB3266 French registration Carburetor version desirable Timeless configuration Launched in March 1970 and based on the DS platform, the SM had the misfortune to be born in a difficult period for large cars. Developed in part with Maserati, the SM was particularly ahead of its time, with a remarkable design and a hydropneumatic suspension system dear to the firm with the chevrons. Although its powertrain may appear to have been derived directly from the Maserati Indy's V8, from which two cylinders had been removed, it turns out that the production SM's engine was developed from a blank sheet of paper. With 6 cylinders in a V-shape, the SM's engine produced 170 hp at 5,500 rpm on carburetor-equipped 1970 to 1972 models. With its four disc brakes with hydraulic control and assistance, Diravi power steering and directional headlamps, and a CX of just 0.339, the SM had everything to succeed! Unfortunately, the oil crisis and the reliability problems encountered by the SM put an end to its career in 1975, after only 12,920 examples had been built. The Citroën SM presented here is a carbureted version that has belonged to the same family since 2002. Maintained by the same family ever since, this SM presents itself as a fine workhorse. The functional mechanics deserve an overhaul to ensure optimum roadholding. On the hydraulic side, a left rear sphere needs replacing, a part supplied with the vehicle. In terms of bodywork, the floors need to be reworked to obtain a valid MOT. 1970 CITROEN SM Serial number: SB3266 French registration Desirable carburettor version Timeless configuration Launched in March 1970 and based on the DS platform, the SM had the misfortune to be born in a difficult period for large cars. The functional mechanics could do with an overhaul to ensure optimum roadholding. On the hydraulics front, a left rear sphere needs replacing, a part supplied with the vehicle. As for the bodywork, the floors need to be redone to obtain a valid MOT.
