DRIEU LA ROCHELLE (Pierre). Autograph letter to a woman. S.l - Lot 96
DRIEU LA ROCHELLE (Pierre). Autograph letter to a woman. S.l., [1936]. 2 pp. folio. "WHY AM I NOT A PURE ARTIST? THERE IS THIS POLITICAL PASSION..." Beautiful love letter, also evoking his novel Beloukia (1936), and his split between literature and politics in the year he joined the P.P.F. " ... Beloukia's conception gradually became clearer. I said to Maxence [Jean-Pierre Maxence, critic at Gringoire]: 'Beloukia is victorious. Victorious over Mansour, victorious over Hassib. But her victory is excruciating; yet how she suffers, her immense suffering turns her selfishness into a kind of heroism... And for his part, Hassib does what he wants, preferring to be defeated by love rather than victorious by ambition. He's not a harem toy..." Beloukia obviously didn't love enough, since she hadn't guessed the desire for glory that lay dormant in Hassib's heart. She discovered this late, too late. But Hassib had hidden it from her so carefully that she wouldn't be tempted to fulfill her duty to him by chasing him off into heroism, where, joining Mansour, he would leave her alone. She also believed that the poet's secret glory was enough for her. Why am I not a pure artist? There's this political passion. I regret not being a purer, greater artist. Or completely political. For 20 years now, I haven't been used to myself, to this double game. And then there's the 3rd temptation, that of the theater. Think about it: give me your opinion. What was your first, raw, instinctive impression of me? That's interesting. Love me, let me lean on you a little. Nourish each other. Give me your blood, I'll give you mine. Through the abominable, the living, the inhuman absence, let us weave a real web, a long banner from one balcony to another through the night, across the sea, along the Seine. My beloved, your love tears me apart and expands my heart."
