1937 MORGAN 4/4 - Lot 74
1937 MORGAN 4/4
Series S3050GE
Carte grise collection
25 000/30 000
The first Morgan with 4 wheels was launched in 1936. Since then, the overall design has remained unchanged, making it unique in automotive history. No one else has achieved such longevity. Historically, the Morgan was called 4/4 for 4 wheels and 4 cylinders, the name becoming Plus 4 with the installation of a 2088cc overhead-valve engine in 1950.
Morgan artfully cultivated authenticity and discreet prestige, conceding the bare minimum to modernism. The bodywork was made of aluminum and the chassis of galvanized steel, but the structures were still made of ash wood, as in 1936 when the adventure began. Mechanically, the performance is there and the Morgan clings to the road, brakes straight and distils its indefinable charm. Morgan has been working on the same convertible style for over 70 years. Here we have the magic ingredients of the true British roadster admired by most collectors. A Morgan combines the driving pleasure of a collector's car with the tranquillity of modern engineering. The interior recreates the best of the past. Everything has remained delightfully frozen.
Remarkably finished, the interior smacks of craftsmanship, and it's easy to see why it took 400 hours to complete, hand-assembled. Its leathers, hood cover, soft top, side-screens and tonneau cover are all in superb condition. There's nothing to suggest a lack of power, braking or handling.
Our 1937 model is one of the first four-wheeled Morgans to be built, equipped with a Coventry Climax engine producing around 40 hp, and mounted on the brand's traditional wooden chassis. Already a high-performance car for its time, this Morgan is a real pleasure to drive, and its quality explains why the model has remained in the brand's catalog for so long.
The car was restored a few years ago and is in very good condition. This Morgan is a great opportunity to acquire one of the first creations of this legendary brand.
