FLAUBERT (Gustave). Autograph letter signed [to Ivan Tourguéniev]. Croisset], July 30 [1875]. 2 pp. 1/2 in-8. "My last letter was 'gloomy', you say, dear friend! But I HAVE A RIGHT TO BE LUGGED, FOR I MUST TELL YOU THE TRUTH: MY NEPhew COMMANVILLE IS ABSOLUTELY RUINED! AND I MYSELF WILL FIND MYSELF VERY DAMAGED? What makes me despair is the position of my poor niece! My (father's) heart suffers cruelly. Very sad days are beginning: money embarrassment, humiliations, disrupted existence. It is complete. & my brain is shattered. I now feel incapable of anything. I WILL NOT RECOVER, MY DEAR FRIEND! I am attacked in the marrow! What days we are having! As I do not wish you to share them, I postpone the visit you allow me in your letter of yesterday. WE CANNOT RECEIVE YOU NOW! AND YET GOD KNOWS THAT AN EMBRACE FROM MY OLD TOURGUÉNEFF WOULD LOOSEN MY HEART! I don't know yet whether I shall go to Concarneau? In any case, it won't be for a month or six weeks! I HAVEN'T WRITTEN TO MRS. SAND FOR A VERY LONG TIME. THEN SAY_x0002_LUI THAT I THINK OF HER MORE THAN EVER. BUT I DON'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO WRITE TO HER. WE'LL HAVE TO GATHER UP OUR WRECKS. IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME, WHAT WILL WE HAVE? NOT MUCH! Here is the most clear. I hope for so long to be able to keep Croisset. But the good times are over, & I have only a lamentable old age in prospect. What would do me the greatest service would be to die. My selfishness is such that I don't talk about you! I can see that. What have I got of your troubles! Give me news of you, & always love your Gve Flaubert " The two writers established a strong friendship in 1863 which lasted until Gustave Flaubert's death in 1880. Provenance: Viardot collection (dry stamp).
