1984 SUZUKI XN85 TURBO TYPE GP71A
Serial number 100B03 Sold with a copy of the French car registration document. Of the four Japanese manufacturers, Suzuki was probably the most reticent about the turbo wave. This technique was hardly part of the brand's sober habits, but fashion being the rule, the game had to be played. This was done, without much conviction but with seriousness, Suzuki chose a classic 650, like Yamaha, as a base, but deigned to add a Mikuni-Bosch L-Jetronic injection system. The turbo was installed above the gearbox, a discreet but poorly ventilated location far away from the cylinder head exhaust pipes. In conjunction with its respectable caliber, this arrangement didn't have a very beneficial effect on performance: like the Yamaha, the XN 85 (so called because of its 85 horsepower) proved to be barely better than the base 650, and its overly wise engine could in no way claim to offer any "turbo effect". In fact, it was the chassis that made the XN 85 make history. The show car prototype benefited from a sealed chain case that was discarded in the production version, but the XN 85 was, along with the Honda VF 750 F, the first production machine with a 16-inch front wheel. Combined with a generally very successful chassis, this geometry saved the short career of a machine whose powertrain was disappointing in more ways than one. Shortly afterwards, this excellent balance of handling was found on the GSX 550 and 750 E.
