ASSEMBLY from the legendary service of Count Orloff Made by the master goldsmith Jacques-Nicolas Roettiers on order of Empress Catherine II in 1770. Silver, vermeil Punches: JNR (from J-N Roettiers), R under the crown, G, 74, N74 (engraved). 25 cm., 671g., France, 1770. One of the legendary gifts made by Empress Catherine II has her favourite Count Gregory Orloff. A magnificent silver and gilt silver service for 60 people consisting of 3000 pieces, among which about 576 plates, the service containing a total of two tons of silver, was made in one year. After the Count's death, Catherine II was able to buy the service back from the heirs. It remained in the royal collection and was used for special occasions. In 1930, a large part of the service was sold in Berlin along with many other works of art by the Bolsheviks. Today we find several parts of this service in the collections of major museums (Louvre, Metropolitan, Hermitage).
