ST. HELENA. MARCHAND (Louis). Autograph letter signed [TO JO - Lot 72
ST. HELENA. MARCHAND (Louis). Autograph letter signed [TO JOSEPH BONAPARTE]. Paris, May 7, 1840. 1 p. folio. "Sire, I have the honour to declare to Your Majesty, in accordance with the desire which it made me express, to know IF, TO HIS [AIN]TE-HÉLÈNE, I HAVE KNOWN FROM THE LEG[S] WHICH THE EMPEROR HAS MADE THE GENERAL COUNT BERTRAND OF HIS SWEEPING IN CASE HIS SON DEATH BEFORE HIS Surrender, that I only became aware of this provision through the General's publication. If there is nothing to remind me of the word which he declares to Your Majesty and to France to have been said to him by the Emperor, THE HIGH HOLDER BELIEVES THAT THE LOYAL CHARACTER AND THE VIRTUALITY OF THE GENERAL, PROHIBITS ME FROM RAISING A DOUBT on the declaration which he had the honor of addressing to Your Majesty . "On the controversy raised around the legacy of the arms of Napoleon I, see above No. 2. LE COMTE MARCHAND, COMPAGNON DE NAPOLÉON IER À SAINTE-HÉLÈNE: son of a protégé of Madame de Montesquiou who became the lullaby of the King of Rome and who followed him to Vienna, Louis Joseph Marchand (1791-1876) was appointed first valet to Napoleon I in April 1814. From then on, he remained attached to him until his death, following him to the island of Elba and St. Helena. There, his devotion and discretion won him the complete trust and attachment of the Emperor, who made him one of his executors and wrote in his will: "the services he rendered me are those of a friend". Merchant would take part in the Return from the Ashes trip, hold the stove cords at the state funeral. He would leave memoirs that were not published until 1952.
