French school of the XIXth century, around Baron GROS. Portrait of Count Claude Etienne GUYOT, in the uniform of colonel of the Chasseurs à cheval of the Imperial Guard. Oil on canvas, with old label on the back on the frame. Important period gilded frame with vine leaves and grape decoration. 116 x 89 cm. First Empire period (circa 1809) Our man stands proudly in front of his mount, dressed in the superb uniform of the officers of the Guards Mounted Hunters. He holds in his right hand the bridle reins of his horse, whose bridle is decorated with palmettes and fleurons. With his left hand, resting on his sword, he holds his colback, held by the flame. He carries his coat on his shoulder. The schabraque is made of panther skin, with double gold braid. Biography: Claude Étienne Guyot (1768-1837) On November 1, 1790, he joined the 10th Regiment of mounted chasseurs, where he obtained all the ranks up to that of captain on February 8, 1799. In turn employed in the armies of the Rhine, Moselle, Vendée and Italy, the young Guyot stood out for his personal courage and administrative talents. On October 13, 1802, he joined the Garde des Consuls as clothing captain to the mounted chasseurs, corps in which he was promoted to the rank of squadron leader in 1804, then major after Austerlitz, colonel major after Eylau and second colonel on 5 June 1809 and finally brigadier general second in command of the regiment on 9 August 1809. At Eylau, at the head of the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs de la Garde, he charged a mass of Russian infantry and crossed two enemy lines. After this affair, he rallied the 2nd Regiment of the Garde, whose colonel had been killed, and retained command of it until the peace of Tilsitt, and then passed to Spain under the command of General Lefebvre Desnouettes, but this general having been taken prisoner at Benavente, Colonel Guyot took over the command, which he retained until 1809.
