Jacopo PALMA IL GIOVANE (c. 1544/48–1628) - Lot 90
Jacopo PALMA IL GIOVANE (c. 1544/48–1628) The Healing of the Blind Man Oil on canvas 95 x 117 cm Note. A great-nephew of Palma the Elder (Palma il Vecchio) and a leading figure in Venetian painting at the turn of the 17th century, Jacopo Palma il Giovane was trained in the family workshop. He perfected his craft during a formative stay in Rome between 1567 and 1574, under the patronage of the Duke of Urbino, Guidobaldo II della Rovere. There he studied the plasticity and anatomical tension of the figures of Michelangelo and Raphael, infusing his art with a Central Italian graphic rigor that enriched the traditional Venetian colorito. Upon his return to Venice, he collaborated with Titian—whose famous *Pietà* (Galleria dell’Accademia) he completed after the master’s death in 1576—and was captivated by the pictorial magnetism of Tintoretto and Veronese. After their deaths at the end of the 16th century, Palma il Giovane became the most sought-after painter in the Serenissima. He orchestrated major public and religious commissions, notably for the Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) and the Oratory of the Crociferi, while also supplying the art collections of patrons throughout Europe.
