SALM (Constance de Théis, Princess of). Complete Works. Pari - Lot 233
SALM (Constance de Théis, Princess of). Complete Works. Paris: Librairie de Firmin Didot frères, Arthus Bertrand, 1842. 4 in-8 volumes, (4, the last one blank)-xxiv-312 + (4, the last one blank)-331-(one blank page) + (4, the last one blank)-334 + (4, the last one blank)-354 pp., brown half-calf, plain spines decorated with motifs and gilt and blind-stamped borders; bindings somewhat worn with the jaw of the first volume split, water stains—more severe in the first volume—and a few foxed leaves (contemporary binding). First collected edition of the literary works of this feminist writer, who began her career in the aftermath of the Reign of Terror, comprising her works in verse and prose, including her memoirs. 4 copper-engraved frontispieces, namely: a portrait after Anne-Louis Girodet, 2 galleries of portraits, and a scene. Provenance: probably the Count of Chambord, Henri de Bourbon, after 1844—that is, after the death of the Duke of Angoulême, which enabled him to lay claim to the French throne (ex-libris engraved with the French coat of arms without a break). This copy thus likely left his library before 1931 and the bulk acquisition of the entire collection by Maggs Books, which then affixed a modern bookplate to all the volumes. Provenance: Jean-Denis Serena Collection
