Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659–1743), follower of - Lot 182
Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659–1743), follower of Presumed portrait of Philippe d’Orléans, Regent of France (1674–1723) Oil on canvas H_53.9 x W_40.5 cm Relining and restoration Bears an old label on the back reading “Philippe, Duke of Orléans and / Regent of France (1674–1723).” With its majestic demeanor and idealized style, this painting is reminiscent of the works of Hyacinthe Rigaud, one of the greatest portraitists of Louis XIV’s reign, particularly famous for his official portrait of the Sun King in his coronation robes. Philippe d’Orléans (1674–1723), Louis XIV’s nephew, became Regent of France upon the Sun King’s death in 1715. He was a cultured prince and a lover of art, music, and science. His reign as Regent ended in 1723 when Louis XV came of age.
