Heinrich VON ANGELI (1840–1925), follower of Portrait of Elisabeth of Wittelsbach, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, known as “Sissi” (1837–1898) Oil on canvas. 116 x 89 cm. Beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame Relined Elisabeth of Wittelsbach, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, married Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1854 at the age of sixteen. A member of the House of Bavaria, she became one of the most famous figures of the Habsburg monarchy. Renowned for her legendary beauty, elegance, and independent spirit, she maintained a unique relationship with the court in Vienna, whose formalities she found difficult to endure. Deeply attached to Hungary, she played a symbolic role in bringing the two kingdoms closer together, a union formalized by the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. Her tragic fate came to an end in Geneva in 1898, where she was assassinated.
