Elisabeth Louise Vigée LE BRUN (1755–1842), after - Lot 167
Elisabeth Louise Vigée LE BRUN (1755–1842), after Portrait of Marie-Caroline, Queen of Naples and Sicily (1752–1814) Oil on canvas 92 x 66 cm Gilded and carved wooden frame In keeping with family tradition, this painting was given by the Queen herself to Mr. Joachim de Régis de Gâtimel (see label on the back). Born in Vienna in 1752, Marie-Caroline was the daughter of Emperor Francis I of Lorraine and Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, as well as the sister of Marie Antoinette. In 1768, she married Ferdinand IV, King of Naples and Sicily, and exerted significant political influence over the kingdom’s affairs. Opposed to the French Revolution, she allied herself with Austria and England before being forced into exile by Napoleon’s conquests. She died in Vienna in 1814, a few months before the final fall of the Napoleonic Empire.
