Admitted to the Academy in 1701, he was a major figure in Parisian artistic life during the reign of Louis XIV. He was regularly summoned to court to paint portraits of the aristocracy. The Museum of the Palace of Versailles, the Condé Museum in Chantilly, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon all hold numerous portraits by his hand. Louise-Françoise de Bourbon (1673–1743), known as Mademoiselle de Nantes, was one of the legitimized daughters of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan. Raised at the court of Versailles, she married Louis III de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, in 1685. A woman of strong character, she distinguished herself through her appreciation for the arts and her role in the court’s social life.
