VAN DER MEULEN, Adam François (1632–1690), After DE HOOGHE, - Lot 79
VAN DER MEULEN, Adam François (1632–1690), After DE HOOGHE, Romeyn (1645–1708) The King’s Entry into Dunquerque (Dunkirk) Large antique engraving, framed under glass 50 x 131 cm (Engraving) 62 x 143 cm (With frame) Beautiful painted and gilded wooden frame Folds, very slight stains. In 1662, Louis XIV made his solemn entry into Dunkirk after the city was recaptured from England. Conquered by the French in 1658, Dunkirk had been handed over to the English by Louis XIV and Mazarin as part of the diplomatic policy pursued after the Battle of the Dunes. The king ultimately decided to reclaim this strategic stronghold on the North Sea. The engraving is part of Adam Frans van der Meulen’s first collection of views and conquests, published in Paris around 1670–1679. It is one of an initial series of thirteen subjects devoted to the events and conquests of Louis XIV’s reign.
