[BERRY (Duke of)]. – PAËR (Ferdinando) and Marc-Antoine Desa - Lot 1
[BERRY (Duke of)]. – PAËR (Ferdinando) and Marc-Antoine Desaugiers. Musical manuscript titled “Stances on the Death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Berry.” [1820]. 6 staves with lyrics for 5 verses, on 1½ folio pages, with water stains. A song by Marc-Antoine Desaugiers set to music by the composer Ferdinando Paër, which was also published in engraved form under the title *Berry n’est plus*: “Berry is no more! By a bloodthirsty hand, / This generous prince has fallen. / France, don your mourning robe, / Heaven, cover yourself with a dark veil, / Berry is no more! / [...] / Berry is no more! But his beloved’s noble womb harbors a budding fruit, / And in six months, France, revived, / Will cease to say with a sigh: / Berry is no more! ” The Duke of Berry, son of the future Charles X, had been assassinated on February 13, 1820, by a fanatical republican, Louvel, leaving behind a widow, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (daughter of the King of Naples), who was pregnant with the future Count of Chambord. Enclosed are three manuscripts: a judgment from the court of Pau (Year VIII), and two collective addresses to Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte from members of the courts (1852).
