"THE ARRIVAL OF EUGENE WITH HIS ENTIRE ARMY..." - Lot 12
"THE ARRIVAL OF EUGENE WITH HIS ENTIRE ARMY..." NAPOLEON I. Letter signed "Napoleon" to the Archchancellor of the Empire, Jean-Jacques-Régis Cambacérès. Ebersdorf [near Vienna], May 27, 1809. 2/3 p. in-4. EUGÈNE DE BEAUHARNAIS' BRILLIANT 1809 CAMPAIGN. Adopted son of Napoleon I and viceroy of Italy, Prince Eugène had been confronted northeast of Venice by an Austrian army commanded by Archduke Jean: after a setback at Sacile on April 16, he made a brilliant offensive comeback, won the Piave victory on May 7-8 and was able to march back towards Vienna. In a proclamation dated May 27, Napoleon I expressed his satisfaction with the victorious march of the soldiers of the Army of Italy. He was about to launch them in pursuit of the remnants of Archduke Jean's troops, whom they would defeat on June 14 at the battle of Raab (now Györ in Hungary), downstream from the Danube. "My cousin, I'm sending a page to the Empress to warn her of Eugene's arrival with his entire army. While waiting for the bulletin to reach you, I am sending you the enclosed proclamation. You can have it published in all the shows, if it reaches you in the evening. Send it by extraordinary mail to Holland and Spain. With this, I pray to God that He may have you in His holy and worthy keeping..." After taking Vienna on May 12, Napoleon I sought to cross the Danube to fight the Austrians on the other bank. A first attempt was unsuccessful due to the uncertain outcome of the Battle of Essling (May 21-22), but the second would lead to victory at Wagram (July 5-6).
