After Hiroshige Utagawa (1797–1858), *Sudden Shower on the S - Lot 161
After Hiroshige Utagawa (1797–1858), *Sudden Shower on the Shin-Ohashi and Atake Bridges*, Woodblock print from the series *One Hundred Views of Edo*, Japan, 32.2 × 21.7 cm (including frame), Posthumous reprint, 20th century, publisher: Daiichi Kougei (in red, on the left margin), The print shows a small section of the Shin-Ōhashi wooden bridge over the Sumida River. A boatman steers his log raft toward the logging sites in Fukagawa, and in the background, on the opposite bank of the river, lies a part of Edo known as Atake after the government ship, the Atakemaru, which was moored there. Six people are crossing the bridge, sheltering under hats, umbrellas, or straw capes from a sudden rain shower. Sudden downpours are a recurring theme in prints; the rain is depicted using a large number of fine, dark parallel lines in two directions—a difficult skill to achieve in woodblock printing. The dark clouds are rendered using a graduated bokashi technique and vary considerably between prints. The rain, the people seeking shelter, and the log raft in the center of the image give the scene a sense of movement. One of Hiroshige’s most famous prints.
