Hokusai Katsushika (1760–1849), after , Red Fuji in a Clear - Lot 160
Hokusai Katsushika (1760–1849), after , Red Fuji in a Clear Sky, Japan, Woodblock print from the "36 Views of Mount Fuji" series, sheet dimensions: 22 x 30 cm + frame, date: 1960s, Several titles refer to this famous print by Hokusai: Fuji at Dawn, Red Fuji, or Refreshing Clear Weather, Calm Wind and Fine Weather, Clear Day with a Southerly Wind. The titles refer both to the color of the volcano and the mildness of the weather. The linework is understated, even minimalist. The difference in scale between the mass of the volcano dominating the composition and the size of the trees depicted, as well as the chosen color palette—dominated by reddish-brown—emphasize the power and majesty of the Sacred Mountain.
