20th CENTURY FRENCH PAINTER - Lot 46
20th CENTURY FRENCH PAINTER "La farce de Maître Pathelin" (The Farce of Master Pathelin) Suite of seven isorel panels and two oils on canvas. Unsigned, three monogrammed "G. Ch". (As is) Note: La Farce de Maître Pathelin is a play (in the farce genre) composed in the late Middle Ages, around 1456-1460. The first printed edition dates from 1485. Published anonymously, it is sometimes attributed to Guillaume Alexis, or even François Villon. With references to the world of justice (trial, judge, lawyer...) peppering the play, some suggest that it may have been written by a man of justice. But according to Bruno Roy, the most likely author is Triboulet, René d'Anjou's jester. The play is the best and one of the earliest masterpieces of medieval comic theater, and is often considered the first comic play in French literature.
