MEDALLION By Thomas Compigné - Lot 115
MEDALLION By Thomas Compigné "View of the Surroundings of Rome, Painted on a Turntable." Made of gilded pewter and painted in polychrome; the reverse is tortoiseshell. Attached frame in blackened wood (missing) 18th century Diameter: 8.5 cm (restorations in the sky and chips on the reverse) Note: A painter and boxmaker for King Louis XV, COMPIGNE specialized in creating relief paintings on pewter of exceptional quality. Originally from Italy, COMPIGNE settled in Paris at the “King David” shop on Rue Greneta and specialized in boxes, backgammon, checkers, and chess sets, snuffboxes, and cane handles made of blond tortoiseshell inlaid with gold. His technique, which remains a mystery, consists of placing a sheet of tin—previously stamped on a die—onto a tortoiseshell or metal base, which he then decorates with gouache, gold, and silver, finishing with a colored varnish.
