FRANCE Aubusson tapestry panel, late XVIIᵉ century Wool and silk 260 x 235 cm Important tapestry depicting a play scene of high-ranking children, treated in a frame of elegant, structured greenery. Under the shade of trees with twisted trunks and dense foliage, three richly dressed children are engaged in a country amusement. One of them is astride a goat, a playful and symbolic motif evoking innocence, vitality and an idealized aristocratic upbringing. The sumptuous costumes, with their precious fabrics and meticulous details, deliberately contrast with the pastoral simplicity of the scene, reflecting the late 17thᵉ century taste for a refined, theatrical vision of noble childhood. In the background, in soft perspective, a bridge and three castles stand out, setting the scene in a controlled, civilized landscape, emblematic of the monarchical order. The composition is framed by a decorative border with garlands of acanthus leaves and flowers, finely treated to enhance the ornamental richness of the whole. In terms of subject and treatment, this tapestry can be compared with the "Jeux d'enfants" suites, popular during the reign of Louis XIV, where childhood became a decorative theme in its own right, combining pleasure, allegory and social representation. Condition : Normal wear and restoration, in keeping with the age of the work, but not detrimental to the legibility or overall harmony of the tapestry. Expert : Monsieur Kassapian
