FLANDERS - Lot 139
FLANDERS Important Oudenaarde Tapestry In wool and silk Late Renaissance, early Baroque, circa 1580 Title: rare hunting scene with wild animals: tiger, wild boar, deer and felines. Dimensions 245 cm high x 310 cm wide. (Restorations, lined tapestry) NOTE : Henri IV stayed in Nerac from 1577 to 1585, where hunting parties and festivities were held. In this carton, the influence of Maximilian's hunting inspirations, the Italian Renaissance and medieval hunts with semi-realistic and semi-imagined animals is clearly treated with remarkable balance. These are aristocratic hunts. Several types of animal can be seen (in the naïve style typical of the period, where zoology is approximate). In particular, a tiger in the lower right (very similar to the series known as "tentures des Indes") is a rarity. On the left, a stylized boar (or wild boar), deer, small felines (fox?) and stylized wild animals surrounded by hunting dogs and hunters. Artists often drew inspiration from princely menageries (with mixed or imaginary animals). The Château de Nerac on the left and a village in the background are surrounded by rich, dense, almost invasive vegetation typical of deep forests. The power of nature and the dominance of this vegetation is very interesting, representing the struggle between nature and the exotic vision (influence of India and Africa). The fight of the wild animals is the portrait of this original exotic hunt. Wide border decorated with rows of figures: decorative figures (inspired by Antiquity, typical of Flemish borders from Oudenaarde and reminiscent of Antiquity, very fashionable around 1580) serving to give a noble, learned appearance imitating Antique sculptures, surrounded by finely drawn compositions of fruit and flowers. 1) Musée d'Audenarde (Belgium), home to some thirty Oudenaarde tapestries. 2) Musée des Arts Décoratifs ( France ) 3) mobilier national ( galerie des Gobelins ) 4) André Diligent Museum of Art and Industry 5) Victoria and Albert Museum Provenance: acquired by the current owner's parents from Galerie Jacques Ollier, Paris Expert: Mr. Kassapian
