FROM THE ANTIQUE - Lot 137
FROM THE ANTIQUE The discobolus Reconstituted stone sculpture, painted white. H: 167 cm (as is) Provenance: Château de Villette, Condécourt (95) Note: Based on the Greek bronze original by Myron (460-450 B.C.). We only know the Greek sculptor Myron's Discobolus from copies, mainly in marble. This famous statue, originally in bronze, depicted a discus thrower in action. It inherits the "Severe style", characterized in the 460-450 decade by great sobriety, anatomical representation of the human body and impassive faces contrasting with the smiling faces of the Archaic period. But even in the middle of the 5th century B.C., this unparalleled athlete was among the works that inaugurated classical Greek sculpture.
