Gilt bronze HANGER decorated with Hercules clothed in the remains of the Nemean lion, the octagonal base adorned with a trophy of club, quiver and lion's head, caduceus, sword and crown of oak leaves, the enameled dial (chips) with Roman numerals signed Chopin in Paris. Historically attributed to Claude Galle (1759-1815). Empire-Restauration period H: 46 W: 38 D: 15 cm (traces of oxidation) Watchmaker, Chopin, active in Paris from 1806, listed in Tardy, dictionnaire des Horlogers. Bibliography: -H. Ottomeyer P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen. Die Bronzearbeiten des Spätbarock und Klassizismus, Munich, 1986, vol. I-II, p. 399, ill. 5.18.20, for a similar model. Catalog note: Claude Galle was one of the greatest bronziers and fondeurs-ciseleurs of the late reign of Louis XVI and the Empire, working notably on the furnishings of the Château de Fontainebleau. This iconography of Hercules at rest, leaning against a tree trunk, holding his club and clad in the skin of the Nemean lion, was inspired by the Hercules Commode from the Belvedere at Versailles, sculpted by Nicolas Coustou after Antiquity.
