CAFETIERE in Namur black earthenware "au deuil de la Reine". - Lot 93
CAFETIERE in Namur black earthenware "au deuil de la Reine". Spout and lid mounted with chased silver ornamentation. Marked with a lictor beam, small guarantee (1798-1809). (Repairs to neck and lid). Late 18th century. Provenance: - Galerie C. Koehler 23/04/1936. Koehler 23/04/1936. History: The families who emigrated to Europe after the French Revolution mourned the beheading of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Fine Namur black earthenware is unusual in late 18th-century Namur production. It is a very dark, almost black, red-brown hard earthenware that closely resembles fine red stoneware, with a glossy black vitrified glaze and rich, finely chased silver trim. The production of black earthenware tableware in Namur in the late 18th century was limited because it was made from a very small deposit of black clay in Bonneville, and was intended for the aristocracy and bourgeoisie of Namur County. Coffeepots and other pieces made from this clay can be found in the collections of several museums.
