Assianus (Johannes). De Institutis cenobiorum Orig f e causi - Lot 20
Assianus (Johannes). De Institutis cenobiorum Orig f e causis et remediis vitiorum Collationibus patrum. Basel, Amerbach, 1497. In-8 17th-century brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, cold decoration on boards, traces of clasps (binding previously restored, light spotting in margins, 2 very small wormholes throughout, handwritten bookplate on title). Beautiful incunabulum with numerous red and blue rubricated capitals. The hermit John Cassian (4th-5th centuries), born on the shores of the Black Sea, visited Egypt with his disciple Germanus and spent several years among the Desert Fathers. He then moved to Marseille, where he founded the Abbey of Saint-Victor. Around 420-430, at the request of Castor, bishop of Apt, he wrote two treatises that were to become important for the history and influence of monasticism in the West: the De institutis coenobiorum (Cenobitic Institutions) and the Collationes (Conferences). In the former, Cassian sets out the rules of monastic life in twelve books, and examines the principal vices against which monks must fight. The second comprises twenty-four conferences explaining the lives of the saints in the form of dialogues with the pious fathers of the Church. A fine, well-preserved copy, despite minor defects.
