Gaspard ROCHETTE (1755-1805) - Lot 167
Gaspard ROCHETTE (1755-1805) Brass pinnacle graphometer. Signed "Rochette à Paris". 18th century. W. 30 x D. 15 cm. In wooden carrying case (H. 16 x W. 33 x D. 18 cm). (Traces of use, wear, no guarantee of function). Note: Invented at the end of the 16th century by French instrument maker Philippe Danfrie (1534-1606), the pinnacle graphometer was the most widely used model, particularly in France, until the 1760s, when it was gradually replaced by the spectacle graphometer. [...] It was used for surveying and topography, measuring angles between objects located on the same horizontal or vertical plane. [...] The measurement of the angle formed by the fixed and mobile alidade is read off from the graduation on the limb. A compass was used for horizontal orientation.
