ALEXANDRIA THE DIVINE - Lot 78
ALEXANDRIA THE DIVINE Set of two volumes: - Volume I: (Collectif) Méla Charles, Alexandrie la divine [Fondation Bodmer exhibition, Cologny-Genève, April 5-August 31, 2014], volume 1/2, copy number 1381/1630, Genève, Edition de la Baconnière, 2014. Alexandria, the axis of the world, was at the heart of the first globalization of knowledge and beliefs in the Hellenistic and Roman eras, for almost a millennium. This book of art and science, which bears its title, evokes what it was and what, thanks to it, were the intellectual, cultural and religious exchanges which, in antiquity, covered the whole of the inhabited world, on the scale willed by the genius of Alexander and ordered by the power of the Roman Empire. The Martin Bodmer Foundation, the Laurentian Library and the Fondation Gandur pour l'Art have combined their treasures and efforts to restore their brilliant destiny. The contribution of over 100 of the world's most renowned scholars and researchers renews our knowledge of the region, and lends an unprecedented dimension to the manuscripts, archaeological objects and historic sites presented here in over 400 original photographs. - Volume II: (Collectif) Méla Charles, Alexandrie la divine: sagesse barbare, volume 2/2, Exemplaire 1381/1630, Genève, Edition de la Baconnière, 2014. The afterword "barbarian wisdom" shows how, in Hellenistic and Roman antiquity, certain thinkers attempted to unite Hellenism and the "barbarian wisdoms". Alexandrian and Christian authors sought to valorize Jewish, Persian, Egyptian or Christian traditions in the face of Greek paideia, going so far as to present Christianity as a philosophy before this project gave way to a theosophy under Constantine. An interdisciplinary meeting analyzed these tensions and dialogues between Greek and non-Greek cultures.
