Alessandro VAROTARI (1588–1649), known as Il Padovanino, att - Lot 238
Alessandro VAROTARI (1588–1649), known as Il Padovanino, attributed to The Oracle of Love after Titian Oil on canvas. H_113 cm W_97.5 cm Damage, restorations, oxidized varnish. Our painting reproduces a composition in a different format by Alessandro Varatori, held at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, which is itself largely inspired by a composition by Titian. This work is known from the engraving by Jacob Matham after Titian, circa 1599/1603, held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, inv. RP-P-OB 27.211. Alessandro Varotari was a Venetian Baroque painter. The works from the early part of his career are often copies after Titian, while his mature works show a profound influence from the great Venetian painter.
