SOUVENIR OF THE GRAND TOUR - Lot 5
SOUVENIR OF THE GRAND TOUR
Hermes of Olympia or Hermes of Praxiteles
Bust in sculpted Belgian black marble, with patina in the hair. On white molded marble pedestal
Germany, 19th century
Height: 77 cm
(Slight chips)
Note.
Our model is based, at 1/1 scale, on the monumental ancient marble figure of Hermes carrying Dionysus discovered in 1877 in the ruins of the temple of Hera in Olympia, and preserved in the Olympia Archaeological Museum. It is traditionally associated with the artist Praxiteles (4th century BC).
This model circulated widely thanks to its plaster edition produced in Berlin by Gebrüder Micheli. In 1824, the Micheli brothers founded a workshop for casts and reproductions, which met with great success with the souvenirs of the Grand Tour.
