Founded in Birmingham in 1836, the company first specialized in improving gilding techniques. As early as 1838, it developed and patented an electroplating process for depositing one metal on another, paving the way for the production of silver-plated objects by electrolysis from 1840 onwards. Financially supported by Josiah Mason from 1842, the company became Elkington, Mason Co. until 1861, and enjoyed considerable success. It introduced electrotyping as a manufacturing method and gained international recognition, notably at the 1851 World's Fair in London. Charles Christofle acquired the electroplating patents for France the same year.
