17th century FRENCH SCHOOL - Lot 157
17th century FRENCH SCHOOL Portrait of Louis XIV in armor (1638-1715) Oil on canvas H : 72 cm W : 60 cm Oxidized varnish, old repaints out of tune on the face Our portrait of Louis XIV in armor is based on an engraving by Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678). Nanteuil was one of the few artists authorized to portrait the monarch. Anecdotes recounted by Charles Perrault tell us that Nanteuil liked to entertain the monarch by telling him "little stories", thus seeking to add gaiety to his expression. Beautifully crafted, the painting is presented in an oval integrated into the composition, against a lighter background.
