Frans II POURBUS (1569-1622), entourage of - Lot 146
Frans II POURBUS (1569-1622), entourage of Portrait of Louis XIII in armor at the age of 22, c. 1624 Oil on copper. H_23 cm L_18 cm Restorations. Inscription "Louis XIII Roy de France Agé de XXII ans". This rare portrait of the young king in armor is to be compared with the various portraits produced by Pourbus and his workshop in the early years of Louis XIII's reign. A Flemish painter from a dynasty of artists, Pourbus was one of the finest portraitists of his time. Queen Marie de Médicis brought him to court to depict members of the royal family, in particular Henri IV, who was assassinated shortly after his portrait was painted. Reasonably sized, our painting was created for a private devotion to the royal image. It is particularly rare to see youthful portraits of Louis XIII, allowing us to know his age at the time of production.
