MARGUERITE OF AUSTRIA. Letter signed "Margarita", in Italian - Lot 19
MARGUERITE OF AUSTRIA. Letter signed "Margarita", in Italian, to Cardinal Filippo Guastavillani. L'Aquila (Italy), May 9, 1584. 2 pp. in-folio, address on back, armorial wax seal under paper. After flattering the cardinal at length, assuring him of her best feelings and offers of services, she solicits his favor by informing him that she is facing trials at the ecclesiastical tribunal of the Rota in Rome: "... il dottor Joseffe Rustici, che invio costi ad assistere per me a qu[e]lle mie liti che tengo in Ruota, nelle quale mi vedo molto travagliata per il favore dei Franzesi, che per ogni via diretta et indiretta cercano di prevalere. Pure confido che al fine prevarrà la raggione, e sarà conosciuta la mia buona gius[iti]a, per la quale mi prometto che V[ostra] S[ignoria] I[llustrissi]ma in ogni occ[asio]ne si adoprerà, concedendomi il suo favore..." Translation: "... Doctor Giuseppe Rustici, whom I send here to attend for me the trials I have at the Rote, in which I see myself tormented because of the French who, by every direct or indirect means seek to prevail. However, I trust that in the end reason will prevail and that my good right will be recognized, to which I flatter myself that Your Illustrious Lordship will make every effort, granting me his favor...". An influential cardinal, Filippo Guastavillani (1541-1587) was the nephew of Gregory XIII (pope from 1572 to 1585), and a few days after this letter, he would be appointed camerlingue, one of the most important offices in the Roman Curia.
