Jean-Jérôme BAUGEAN (1764-1819) - Lot 111
Jean-Jérôme BAUGEAN (1764-1819) The ship Dix-Août leaving Toulon harbour Watercolor and graphite on paper 56.5 x 87.5 cm (83 x 115.5 cm with frame) Signed lower right and dated "An 10" (1802) Stains and central fold The Dix-Août was a 74-gun ship-of-the-line of the French navy, renamed in 1798 in honor of the insurrection of August 10, 1792, a major event of the French Revolution marking the fall of King Louis XVI and the capture of the Tuileries Palace by revolutionaries. Originally built under the name Cassard, she represented the standard ship-of-the-line type of the late XVIIIᵉ century, armed with two decks and 74 guns. The ship was renamed Brave in 1803 under the Consulate, as the French navy gradually abandoned names with revolutionary connotations.
